Audacity is an open-source and freeware utility that enables users to edit their own audio online. A group of volunteers developed it with a distribution license of GNU General Public License. It allows you to remove noise, cut off unimportant parts, create collages, use effects, etc while importing your own audio file. If you are a professional and creating music, podcasts, or audiobooks, Audacity is the best option.
Create Montage
You can edit a podcast while mixing the multiple tracks that are recorded at different times. The first thing you need is trimming, go to the Tools Toolbar, and select the area you want to remove using your mouse cursor. The highlighted area should be in white color. You can enhance the selected area, now press delete, or the backspace key to remove. The selected area will be disappeared.
Again select the specific area from your track, and press Command + Ctrl + V. Now drag the clip you want to the workspace. You can select multiple clips while holding the Shift.
Now, drag the track while pressing and holding it to the place where its start button and end of the other track join. A yellow line shows the final closeness of both tracks. It means that one track will start when the other will end.
Multiple Formats Support
The importing of sound files to different formats is possible; you can import files in WAV, AIFF, AU, FLAC, and Ogg Vorbis, and export them as well. The formats support libsndfile i.e. GSM 6.10, 32-bit, 64-bit float WAV, and U / A-Law.
Use libmad for importing MPEG audio including MP2 and MP3. Likewise, use the Import Raw command for importing the raw audio files. It also helps in creating WAV or AIFF files.
Use the optional LAME encoder library for exporting MP3 files, and the option FFmpeg library for importing and exporting AC3, M4A/M4R (AAC), and WMA.
Enhanced Sound Quality
The tool offers high-quality resampling and dithering for converting the sample rates and formats. The real-time auto conversion is available for tracks while having the sample rates and formats in different styles. The support for 32-bit and 64-bit allows the users to use samples in different styles.
Online Editing
All necessary editing tools including cutting, copying, pasting, and deleting are available to mix several numbers of tracks. You have the option of Undo and Redo for going back to any step to make changes again. You can add multiple clips to your tracks, label tracks, and modify the volume using the Envelop tool.
Innovative Effects
Maintain the tempo while changing the pitch, removing the background noises, and changing frequencies using different effects including Equalization, Bass Boost, High/Low Pass, and Notch Filter. Moreover, the use of Compressor, Amplify, Normalize, Fade In/Fade Out help to adjust the volume smoothly. In addition, you can use the Auto Duck effect for creating voice-overs for podcasts.
Multiple Toolbars
You will find several additional toolbars that are housed in the interface under the View option;
Transport Toolbar: it is for controlling the playback and recording as a whole. Start recording audio by clicking the red circle, and the black square button to stop the recording.
Tools Toolbar: it is the best collection of tools for modifying your tracks such as an envelop tool for adjusting volume on smooth bases, a draw tool for redrawing the waveforms, and one of the innovative multi-tools that allows you to switch between multiple tools.
Edit Toolbar: it deals with multiple editing tools such as zoom-in, zoom-out, fit-to-width, and zoom toggle tools. The trim tool is here for removing all unwanted parts of tracks.
Audio Setup Toolbar: it adjusts the setup of recording and playback of the audio while offering the option of selecting the microphone.
Recording Meter Toolbar: set the loudness of the recording.
